Machine guns drove the use of canister rounds out of favor, but they reappeared in WW2 for use in 37mm size in US tanks. Then the "bee hive" flechette rounds used in Viet Nam could be considered a type of canister. Some ides keep coming back when a need for them appears.
 
The UK still had canister rounds, at least until the 1990s, for use with the 76 mm Armoured Car gun.
