12 Pounder 8 CWT headstamp

Well-Known Member
I picked this 12 Pounder 8 CWT case up at the car boot sale on Saturday.

Can anyone tell me what the "C 1" and "(K)" on this headstamp mean?

Is K a manufacturer's mark for King's Norton?

The only other markings are " 3 N 97" and "C.F" which are standard.

It's a shame about the hammer marks on the base, but I can't really complain when the case cost me a fiver.

Thanks for any info.

nice find 8cwts are a lot rarer than any of the 12's. I am not sure if K is early Kings Norton as by 1900 (the earliest I have) they used their letters in the rectangular ish symbol. Could it be Kynoch?

there is also a K without seriffs and not in a circle stamp as found on 6pr navy cases, whose mark is that? any ideas?
