1940 dated 6 pounder anti tank

This one proves its always worth checking the headstamps - a slightly battered 6 pounder case that I nearly walked straight past..........HOWEVER..........the headstamp says:

6pr AT
DD/L 10407
1940
ECC

How early is that!!

The design of the 6 pounder anti tank gun was completed by 1940 but the carriage design was not completed until 1941. The defeat in France delayed production further so it was decided to continue with the 2 pounder. The result was that production was delayed until November 1941 and the 6pr 7cwt wasn't introduced into service until May 1942.

The case shown is very similar to a standard service 6pr 7cwt case - the only difference bring in the neck area which appears to be slightly longer than on a service case (although the complete case is the same length).

If anyone has any further information on these very early 6pr AT development rounds I'd be interested in hearing from them.

Dave.
