37mm But What Is It?

Hi Guys,

I recieved this 37mm round in the post today, any information at all would be great.

The only markings that i can see are on the projectile and fuze.

Projectile: VSM

Fuze: A

It is the Common Shell 37mm for the Vickers/Maxim Pom Pom, and the VSM stands for Vickers Sons and Maxim.

It ould have been made for any number of customers.

Made by Vikers Sons & Maxim. Interesting that it has been fired, not so often seen. It could date any where from 1898 till they stopped making them. Do you know where it came from any story attached.

As far as it bieng fired i thought that would have been a bad thing as i know most collectors prefered unfired projectiles. The only dissapointment with this is that the driving band looks to have been cut??

I have no clue about the history, i purchased it from a guy who lives on the Isle Of Man, i think that it had been sitting in his shed for many years.

I usually leave rounds as they are but I think that it may be worth my while cleaning this one up a little as it is a little tatty.

The cut marks on the driving band that you refer to are the marks left by the rifling in the barrel when the shell was fired, as George pointed out.
