Cutaway model of a 4,7cm Bpg (Brisantpantsergranaat / APHE shell) for the 4,7cm Bohler Pag (Pantser afweer geschut / anti tank gun).
The projectile exists of a pointed steel projectile with a threaded ogive shaped hole in the base to receive the explosive charge and the base fuze No.45. The nose of the projectile is hardened.
The explosive charge exists of three parts; the main charge of hard pressed TNT in top, a softer pressed charge of TNT below that (together 24 grams of TNT), and –surrounding the detonator- a charge of 6 grams Tetryl.

The fuze used in this projectile is the Sb. (Slagbuis / impact fuze) No.45.
Functioning of the fuze: In the lower part of the fuze a brass ring with six axial slots at 60 degr. each – fixating six balls at 60 degr. apart- is placed. This ring locks the balls from outside inward. The firing cap housing has a chamfered edge which fits over the balls, locking them up from inside out. A spring above the firing cap housing wants to press the firing cap into the firing pin, it is however held away by the balls. A bronze interrupted spring ring keeps the brass ring in lower position. After firing the bronze spring ring bends open so the brass ring can move forward on impact, releasing the six balls. The firing cap is now free to move down into the firing pin , however, the enourmous negative acceleration generated during the piercing of the target keeps the firing cap in forward position untill the target is passed and speed is constant. The flame of the firing cap ignites the detonator (white) and the main charge.

The brass shellcase is filled with strips of powder (lintbuskruit 194 x 7,8 x 1mm).
There are Dutch (AI) and Austrian (ENZ) manufactured cartridges. The one sectioned here is of Austrian origin. The Dutch cartridge cases have a different firing cap and the projectile uses a different base fuze (Sb No.36).

Vo. APHE projectile: 660 mtrs/sec
Penetration: 30 mm atv 500 mtrs @90 degr.
Max. range: 6000 mtrs.
Length complete cartridge: 329mm
Length projectile: 156mm
Length shellcase: 227mm

The Bohler gun was very modern for it’s time Wheels and shield could be removed very fast , leaving a very low profile gun only. It was towed by a Trado-4 truck.
Per ammowagon (one per gun) 80 APHE and 20 He cartridges were carried.
386 of these guns were purchased by the Dutch army in 1938. It was towed by a Trado-4 truck, either horse drawn.

Regards, DJH
