Did anyone hazzard a guess as to why there are no coloured bands...is it a re-paint or were coloured bands only introduced after mass production started?...or did New Crown Forgings make it for the Americans? - Is that possible, would it also explain the American-esqe driving bands?

both wild guesses tbh )....but may provoke interest !

belfast makers

Woops, my cut and paste jumbled it on posting, have these as Belfast shell makers
WCA is Coombe, Barbour & Combe. WCJ is W Barlow & Sons. WCK is John Andrews and Co. WCL is Henry Campbell & Co Ltd.

NCF = New Crown Forgings Ltd,
Thank you for the information 2pounder.
I had assumed after Tim's post that the stamp would follow the pattern of company initials. Whereas when you look at the Belfast company codes it seems to follow a prefixed sequence.
For example WC and then A

It may be that this sequence is just a coincidence, but the obvious thing is the letters are not the company initials.

Paul,

The undermentioned are WWI Belfast shell makers. The 'WC' prefix denotes that the companies manufacturing the shells were undertaking sub-contract work for Workman Clark.

I know you wanted WWII manufacturers, but at the moment my computer is somewhat ill and as a consequence I can't search against WWII listings to see if any of these companies were manufacturing warlike stores in that conflict.
