if down in this neck of the woods..

Matiu/Somes island is situated in Wellington harbour, easily accessible by ferry.
During WW2 it was used as an alien internment camp and also housed an AA unit, with emplacements for 4 x 3.7" guns.Due to its being used after the war as an animal quarantine area and more recently as a wildlife conservation refuge, the emplacements are fairly intact and haven't suffered from the graffiti on more accessible emplacements.
The island also housed a ship degaussing station to reduce the magnetic mine risk.

Hi Kahu1 :hello:

We will have to stop over and take a look the next time we pass through on the way to Blenheim. Wasn't it also used as an internment camp for the Germans from Western Samoa at the outbreak of WWI? Just hope that it is one of those rare sunny windless days next time we're there. Our balls nearly froze off and couldn't stand up straight for the wind when we were last there in December 2008, but then we had just come out the tropics.

Cheers, :ciao:
