This movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432314/ has an awesome opening scene, the first several minutes are as good as the beginning of "Saving Private Ryan". And here is a personal add-on, my grandfather's "For Defence of Leningrad" medal's paperwork, he survived but lost most of his teeth due to malnutrition. I remember him saying that in the morning many cadavers in the morgue would be missing their gluteal muscles, the medical students would cut off cadavers' buttocks and eat them.
