Beano

Hey all, I just joined last night. Most of my stuff is in boxes due to refinishing my basement. Here is last find. I got it a couple years ago in a trade. I am not very good at taking pictures, so here goes. It is missing a few parts, beat up a bit, and has a little rust, but hey it is still a beano!

The body looks to be in decent shape. Are the internal workings of the ffuze still there or has it been gutted?

T13 Beano

Here is an overview

Thanks for showing it to us.

Battle grenade?

There seems to be some question as to whether or not the Beano made it into the war. On both informational sites it is stated that it "may" have been used in the Normandy invasion and may have caused many U.S. death due to premature ignition. So it may or may not have seen action. Both sites state that the area used was Normandy, so one is led to beleive that it did see WWII action. but unconfirmed? so who knows? Dano

I have a photocopied page out of a book that I got out of a book years ago. I will scan it and post it. I believe that it says that the beano was only used by the OSS, but don't quote me on it.

I have only seen another Beano and it was painted blue and all stencilled up. So, I was pretty excited when I got this in a trade.

Thanks for the comments and the info.

Hi, Here's a bit of info from"Clandestine Warfare, Weapons and equipment of the SOE and OSS" by James Ladd & Keith Melton. Cheers

Tim,

Anything interesting written on the label? It looks like a model with an early fuze (deeper threading).

All,

The Plumber's Kitchen gives a good account of the development of these (and the WP version).

Some photos of another one.

Norman,

From what is written on the label I suspect that this is a pre-production prototype.

The label states;

"T5 Fuze Inert with heavier plastic body ??"butterfly" etc.

On the other side
"Butterfly" will be dull green."

"Plastic will be mottled and not so shiney"

Regards

TimG.

Thanks Tim, that explains the early fuze. Not just a common old Beano then :tinysmile_shy_t:

Lab. grenade

There was something similar on gun broker some time back. The story went was that the seller got it from his grandfather who worked in the grenades development at Eastman Kodak and appearantly was a speciman from the Eastman Kodak labrotories. I don't know if Tim's grenade is the same one or a similar unit...Dano

Maybe similar, but not the same. We've owned this specimen for at least 35 years.
