Boom

From the visible shocks formed, these are the type caused by an object moving close local speed of sound, which of course varies with the local metrological condition's and altitude.

Even though the object may be subsonic, due to its shape the air has to flow over it at greater than the local speed of sound, and as such shocks are formed. Below are: a diagram showing airflow over and shock formation on a wing; and an image showing shadowgraphs of an example bullet at different velocities showing the shock formation.
