A friend found this interesting box at an Australian auction and I had to have it.
It contained 12 signals, lanyard, cleaning hook and 12 friction tubes originally but it is empty now. Size is 13" x 9" x 9.5" high.
The outside lid label is badly scuffed but the inside lid label is nice and blue.
The box is zinc? lined with 1 1/8" high ply at base over a cardboard base lining showing the marks left from storage of the signals.
2 side handles and a steel rim around the lid top. Boxes were made to hold 6, 12 or 24 distress signals and accessories.
Signals were made by the Cotton Powder Co, Ltd from 1880's and used on the Titanic too in 1912 so very old and lucky to survive the years of storage.
Signals were white? and placed into a socket holder, a friction tube placed in the hole at the top and launched by pulling a lanyard.
After about 600 feet it bursts into coloured balls. Carried by passenger steamers in lieu of carrying guns and rockets.
