British 20pdr APCBC

Well-Known Member
Things do still turn up in junk shops, acquired this week a 20pdr APCBC (spotted by the wife). I am surprised by the rubber skirt at the base of the projectile and the non-copper driving bands. I think that this example is dated 1969, which also surprised as I thought this type of projectile would have been replaced by APDS by then. Photographed next to a 17pdr APC for comparison.

Full stamped and painted markings: AP/CBC, 20PR, MK1/2, MA 8 68 37 (in red paint 1/69).

What a helpful wife, mine would probably have kept quiet.

The skirt is correct, there's one I've got advertised for free in classifieds if you want it as an upgrade.

Good question, I don't really know. The metal is very hard so definitely not Lead. I have wire brushed the driving bands and they maintain their dull colour unlike the German soft iron bands which shine very easily. Any expert advice?
