Can someone clarify the law and collecting?

Having had a nervous family member view my small collection just want some clarification.
I understood that normal rounds, such as target practice rounds and handgun/gpmg rounds are legal for anyone to own if inert and require no licence?

On the other hand what exactly requires a licence, specifically in relation to Section 5?

Browsing the SA site I saw these two items which caught my eye but then I wondered about the above:

Can you actually obtain the relevant licence purely for collecting inert items, rather than owning a firearm already?

Hi.As far as.i know you dont need a licence to collect inert ordinance .you would need a collectors licence for live rounds.the items on the auction site are fine. The seller has put unfired as regards to the unmarked drive band not that its live .hope this helps.

Iy may be advantageous for you to apply for a firearms certificate with the appropriate collectors condition. For an initial fee of 50 you get a 5 year certificate that will permit the acquisition and possession of a considerable quantity of live rounds, including many that would be captured by Sect 5 ( expanding and AP for example). In my opinion this would give you greater scope when making purchases to supplement the inert items you already possess.
Have a look at previous threads on BOCN in relation to collecting, Sect 5, Free From Explosives, self certification etc. There has been much discussion on these topics and I am sure you will glean some useful information from the posts.
Talking specifically about AP rounds there is still some high level decision making taking place with regard to the classification of items that have formerly been part of AP rounds (the core, sabot pots and petals etc) and whether these items are captured by Section 5.

Thank you for the replies. I also had some info Pm'd to me so now am a bit clearer of what is and isn't Ok :)
I may look at a licence in the future once I see how serious a collector I become as it seems quite a long process.
