Clansman radios and the law

Just thought I'd post here a question about military radios. I have an urge that is uncontrollable to buy and old army radio, maybe a 350 or 351.
I want it for display really but it would be nice to have a working one. I was just needing to know, though it is illegal to transmit over military frequencies as a civi, are there any restrictions on listening to them?

Yes.

Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949

(b) otherwise than under the authority of a designated person either

(ii) .....,
shall be guilty of an offence under this Act.

I have been told by radio hams etc that you can receive without a licence but not transmit, you need licence to transmit. Obvoiusly receiving and using military and police bands is a no no. So what about AM radio sets that are shortwave ie ww2 receiver sets that quite a lot of radio hams use. Are the miltary and police frequencies bands VHF?

Try getting aomeone to mess with the gubbins inside to allow it to TX/RX on legal frequencies.

That sounds like a sensible idea, especially with kids around the house with their curious fingers. Would this be a difficult task requiring specialist equipment?

British radios

Have a few ex army mates, they told me that on manouveres in the past in armoured vehicles brit comms equipment gave pretty poor results and they often resorted to using there mobile phones! Perhaps a DAB radio tuned to radio 1 or 2 might be more exciting mate!:tinysmile_fatgrin_t

Maybe you're right. They do look cool though. Maybe I could use it as a door stop or something

You could use a MP3 player conected to a Maplins ampilfier powered by a 12v battery and use the radio speaker as out put. you could then make up your own radio sounds for a relisitic display sound. I do have details of what you would need ie amplifier.
