Firing device release M1, Booby trap fuze, USA

Cutaway model of a “firing device release M1” connected to the grenade body of a Mk2 handgrenade. This combination can be placed under a landmine to hamper clearance operations either be placed under an object to form a booby trap. The object placed on top must at least have a 2Lb weight and is placed on the latch (pict 02, red arrow). The latch (A) forms a lever with the –minimum- 2Lb weight on one side of the latch, and the short side of the latch hooked into the spring loaded hammer (B). If the weight is removed from the latch, it will be rotated by the spring loaded hammer which strikes the firing pin (C) which ignites the firing cap. The firing cap ignites the detonator, detonating the grenade.

If the fuze is placed and a weight is placed on top, the fuze is still safe by means of a J-shaped safety pin with a string attached to it that fixates the latch in the armed position. The latch must be fully depressed and touch the fuze body for the J-shaped safety pin to be removed. If the Latch is not fully depressed the J-shaped safety pin cannot be retracted and the fuze cannot be armed. This mechanism enshures the fuze cannot be accidentally activated when incorrectly handled.

A though hole (D) has been drilled in the fuze housing, this is to be able to insert a pin or thick wire to disable the fuze in the field, as it is not possible to replace the J-shaped safety pin once the fuze is armed.
The “firing device release M1” can be placed uder a mine, but can also be burried with the latch flush to the ground surface with an object placed on top that will be picked up by an unsuspecting person like a rifle, a bottle of liquor, a (motor)cycle or any other object that attracts the attention.

The handgrenade is a possibillity, the fuze can also be connected to a standard block of explosives or a detonation cord leading to a larger explosive charge.

The fuze measures 51x51 mm (2”x2”) over the back cover and is 61 mm (2,4”) long -including the threaded pipe housing the firing pin-. A 101mm (4 Inch) long strip with two holes has been welded to the base of the fuze, allowing it to be fixated to an object.
Regards, DJH

It looks like it comes with a special detonator with zero delay, is that correct?

All the U.S. Boobytraps come with a percussion primer that typically has a nipple on the opposite end, onto which a fuse style blasting cap (detonator) is crimped.

It's a nipple with a firing cap and detonator tube that fits all pull-, pressure, pressure release and booby trap fuzes. As far as I know it has no name or number. It also has no delay.
