For research: The National Archives

Only about a million times!

It is the de facto source of information on British military (and other) matters. Every serious researcher will be very familiar with the NA Catalogue. You will not find any referenced book, dissertation or thesis on British matters (military or not) that does not include citations to the National Archives.

Thanks, Tony. Can you get the documentation online or do you have to go to Kew to register first?

Some information is on-line, but it is mainly "popular history" rather than detailed matters. You need to go to Kew to register for a readers ticket. Once you are registered, on subsequent visits you can place your orders on-line before you visit so documents are waiting for you.

I currently spend a couple of days a month there at the moment, but that will increase later this year. There is a certain amount of hit and miss with some records, as an individual "record" can be a single letter or a couple of large boxes of documents.
