Fort Rinella (and 100 ton gun), Malta

Falcon

Well-Known Member
This was one of my favourite locations in Malta. Fort Rinella was built in the
late 1800s. It's purpose was to house a 17.72in Armdtrong RML gun to defend the Island against attacks from Italian warships armed with these guns. The fort is very well maintained and there are various live action events by re-enactors in Victorian era British uniform during the day. I watched a drill demonstration while I was there.

These photos show:

A collection of period swords and rifles on display inside the fort.

A collection of cannon balls and studded shells of various sizes, with a German 50kg bomb body in the middle.

A 4.2" Armstrong siege gun that is fired at 2pm every day and can be fired by a visitor for a donation of 20 euros. Unfortunately I got there too late to do this.

The replica U-Boat for the film U571 which is owned by a film production company based in front of the fort.

Finally, a couple of critters hiding in the gun mounting!

Nice photos, thanks for posting them.

Is the 17.72 inch gun real or a replica? It looks to be missing some pieces, like the caps over the trunions, to hold them on the carriage!
