Is this an American fuze or of French manufacture etc. It has been suggested that it is a MKV
type but not marked as such, the only mark aside from some idiots vice jaw marks is shown. I'm no expert on these at all ~

Shown beside a 1944 primer for I don't know what--

Hello,

It's not an americain MkV. The MkV is the american version of the french fuze 24-31mm Mle 1899. The steel head (with safety Lejay inside) is screwed on a the brass base. Your fuze has a one piece head (brass).
It's a french design "Schneider 24-31mm Mle 1914 trac 1644".
But I don't know what is this stamp and if US used this fuze.

Regards

The US version can be found in both steel and brass, the material is not a reliable indicator. I've also seen them with a variety of markings, or at times unmarked. The French as well.

I have been told it is this , "This is a french Schneider fuse model 1915 used mainly for Toxic gas 75 mm shells"

I presume it is not a rare fuze at all ~

Hello,

French fuze 24-31mm is made with a safety head in steel screwed, the rest of the fuze is made of brass. The screwed top (closing cap of the safety "Lejay") is the right indicator to identify this fuze.
I don't know if the Us version (MkV) is made with different material but it's not the subject because your fuze has a "Schneider design".
Your fuze has no cap screwed, so it's not a MkV or 24-31 Robin, and internal construction is different.
Actually the schneider fuzes were extensively used on 75 toxic shells but also with HE.
24-31mm Robin Lejay 1899 are very common but 24-31mm Schneider a little less.
And to complicate our job Schneider made a lot of 24-31 with different shape !!

To compare :

24-31mm Robin Lejay 1899 :

-French Schneider 24-31mm Trac 1644B (same as your fuze)

and this fuze on a gas 75mm :

It does seem to be a rather delicate fuze safety wise -- careful handling required I would think.

Well if I find a French 75 made into a Lamp - I'm ready !

You appear to be correct - I guess it's a pretty generic primer, 25pdrs etc.
Too large for 6 pdrs. A spare if any one needs it.

Several more primers, they all seem to use the same base size, one electric and the other percussion.
Paper liner still present.
