German egg grenades

First pic shows German egg grenades with fragmentation rings. Third pic shows German egg grenades without fragmentation rings. Second pic shows German egg grenade made entirely of wood. Why would anyone make a wooden egg grenade? Happy Easter! Alan1.DSCN0797[1].jpgDSCN0799[1].jpgDSCN0798[1].jpg

Many thanks for suggestion, and that thought had crossed my mind, but as the transit cap cannot be removed there is no possibility of a drill fuze being inserted and, of course, the weight is entirely wrong for practice throwing.
But do you have any supporting evidence for wooden grenades being used in this way? preferably period German.
Thanks again for the helpful view, wch I much appreciate.

Those are not fragmentation rings, they were made with them just for better grip. The early model 1916 was smooth and bad to handle.
