In WW1, how did they get the 1000 Kilo bomb up into the air?

I didn't think at that stage any airdraft were capable of carrying a bomb that size, unless it was dropped by Zeppelin.

bomb weight

You know I was wondering that myself, The early Eindecker was in the area of 85 hp (hell, Iguess they were lucky to carry 6 or 7 hand dropped bombs). Pilots in those days have my total envy as they were pioneers to the nth degree. Dano

1000 kg bomb

I found out that the biggest bomber of the German luftwaffe in ww1 the Gotha was only able to lift bombs up to 500 kg i thing this 1000 kg bomb must be from a zeppelin !!

Fokker EIII Eindecker

Here is a picture of an early German Foker EIII Eindecker single wing (mono-plane) one machine gun fighter. This aeroplane dropped hand dropped bombs. It was all of 85hp so could not carry big bombs. this is my personal favrite German WW1 aircraft. this picture was taken from the cover of a plastic 1 to 48 model kit. Dano

Fokker E III

yes with this Fokker E III Max Immelman and Oswald Boelke getting the first german fighter ace during WW1 both are getting killed some months later i gues Immelman because he shoot away his own propeller and Boelke because of an collision with an other german plane because he forgott to wear his saefty belt !!

best regards David

Thanks some great pictures of PW bomb types. I recently picked up, which I can recommend for WW2 as well.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/German-Air-...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330038068&sr=1-1

Which has a section on the PWs, and some good pictures showing them being handled and on aircraft.

A project I have on hold, is researching Bomb damage from Zeppelin Raids, after picking up the book "The Baby Killers" some 3 yrs ago. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Baby-Killer...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330038400&sr=1-1 This gives a pretty good account of the raids.

I am curious to find out what was the largest bomb used, and if there is any information on what was dropped on each raid. Perhaps one day I will have a dig in the National Archive.

I assume you guys are aware of MLRS who do some great facsimile manual etc reprints. But just in case here is a link http://www.mlrsbooks.co.uk/bookstor...ce?PHPSESSID=3b79855e53ae2ddb0eaa7b6f1fe39997
