Grenade Filling and Inserting Fuses

Hi Guys,

I have been doing a bit of research into the F1 grenade. I understand they come in a box of 20 with the fuses not inserted.

Is the filling separated somehow inside the grenade to make a channel for the fuse? Or is it simply pushed and crunched out of the way when the fuse is screwed in?
I know TNT takes a detonator to set it off but I wouldn't really be wanting to be screwing a fuse directly into it.
Its been boggling my mind for a few days so I thought id ask :)

Regards,
Lee

They have a plastic plug screwed into the bodies that maintains the channel for the detonator. It is removed and the fuze inserted.
Sorry, don't have a photo to hand.

Here's a pic of a couple of different filling configurations. Cheers

Have seen wooden plugs on ww2 grenades too.
There is also a paper insert that holds the shape of the well (number 3 on the right picture).

Yep, Nanob is right. There were short plugs, long plugs and wooden plugs as well. There was a paper tubing inside to prevent the TNT from blocking the channel for the fuze detonator. There were two types of filling, both TNT but one was poured into the F1 body and one was granular.
This should be all :)

Same thing goes with RG-42 but there was a solid steel tube unside, that's why there were only short plugs inserted. There was no need for the longer ones.

Ahh yeah I saw pictures of the plugs fitted to the grenades however I thought they were only small to stop the tnt from falling out the hole in the top, I didn't realise they were that long, I managed to find a set of 4 on ebay so they are on the way :)

I haven't been able to find much info on the paper tubes inside, by any chance does anybody have any pictures? Im curious as to how they would fit.

Thanks for the info, great site here :)

I do have a photo, on which the paper/cardboard insert can be seen (a little). But logically in this Picture a life grenade is shown. Does it fit the forum rules when I post a photo of a 'sharp' grenade??
Of course this grenade is not in my possession, but was photographed with an authority.

Best wishes from Germany.

The picture would be greatly appreciated.

I have just had a skim over the rules which state "You may NOT upload any images containing material that is of pornographic nature, illegal, defamatory, threatening, obscene, harmful to minors, promoting racism, hatred or discrimination of any kind. Images may NOT violate child pornography or child sexual exploitation laws." so I think it will be ok.

Of course I am a newbie here, if anybody knows otherwise please say so.

Thanks for the useful hint !
I meet the term "Ordnance approved Member" , but I am not sure whether or how I previously must prove to the administrators before posting.
I'll ask Spotter.

Best wishes from germany.
