ID large shell case

G'day members. Can anyone please assist with the ID of the shell casing with the headstamps illustrated in the attached image. Also looking for info re the projectile markings as one
of our members is going to turn one up in wood for our meeting room...Cheers.... Rod

It always helps a lot to have measurements: of the rim diameter, the inside mouth diameter and the length. Of these, probably the rim diameter is the most consistently useful as large cases are often cut down.

In this case, the headstamp says 4 in Mk V, which was introduced in WW1 and was the RN's standard single AA gun of 4 inch calibre during the interwar period, with many still in service in WW2. The rim diameter should be 142 mm and the case length 727 mm.

Can't help with the projectile details, sorry.
 
Thanks Tony for the input. First step is to ID the item then we shall see where to go from there and to assist I called in to where the shell is kept to get the dimensions you asked for. The rim diameter is 142 and the length is 720mm. Looks like you nailed it in your last sentence above. Cheers.... Rod
