Something that i spotted at a little museum was this
rather large Mine looking object.

A possitive ID would be a big help please.

Could you give any rough dimensions Phil?
Also was the country of origin stated?

regards Kev

Hi Kev

It was found on mud banks in Essex and the height is roughly 2.1metres high by 600 milimetres wide with a round cone on the nose.

It well could be,as it is a very thin walled casing which would denote
dispenser or such like.

Someone must have a pic of it in some reference book somewhere.

The recesses dont "look" like they are for suspension lugs.

I suppose that it could be for a moored sea mine perhaps, using an influence fuzing system that attacked surface ships?

Dont know though, sorry.

If it isnt a mine then the holes probably are for suspension lugs and i would lean more towards a container of some description - holding sub munition et cetera. These are broken into aimable and non-aimable, with the former having a strengthened "saddle" allowing it to be "punched" from the aircraft.

Can't help you on the I.D., but I agree with Waff, the two holes appear to be trepanner holes.

Identification

This is a US influence sea mine Mk 13 (acoustic). This mine can be used as a bomb too (nose fuze well). The pockets visible on the picture are for the extender and the clock starter. This one may be a dummy.

Repeat Post

This item has been posted on BOCN once before but I don't remember details or its post subject title.
