Japanese navy large calibre primer

BOUGAINVILLE

Well-Known Member
Hi all,

Here is one of my recently adquired items. It is a Japanese Navy artillery shell primer for large calibre cases. The base is 38mm wide and the primer is about 12cm in length.

Any information would be greatly welcome.

Cheers,
BOUGAINVILLE

Hi,

That's a very nice primer!
The only things I can say about it is that it was made at Kure, as is shown by the anchor and the Kanji (but surely you already knew this), and that it seems to be one of those protruding primers, as seen e.g. on the 12Pr cases.
My guess would be that it is a pretty old primer (I'm guessing from before the Showa era, but I'm not certain); and indeed the Japanese used several Naval calibres that took protruding primers. I'll have a look-see in my documentation to see of I can find out for which calibres this type of primer was used.

Cheers!
