1940, a column of Parisian refugees is attacked by German planes and a little girl's parents and her dog are killed https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043686/, she wanders into a French country side and into a large and poor family of farmers. The family takes her in. She is preoccupied with giving her puppy a proper burial and together with a young farmer's son they create a cemetery of various animals in an abandoned water mill. The boy starts stealing crosses for animals' graves which, combined with an old feud with a neighbour, creates very real and significant problems. Swaying from deadly serious to circus-like comic (farmers' fist fight when they fall into a fresh grave), this is a view of war and death seen through child's eyes.
The English translation of the title is "Forbidden Games" but I wonder if "Jeux" has some archaic meaning of "Toys".
I was fortunate to see old houses and barns like the ones in this movie when I visited a place called Titaguas in south central Spain, so I felt very comfortable with all the action in and around the old farm house.
