Thats an unusual carrige isnt it having a small wheel at the back i thought they usually had trail legs that closed and were used for pulling the gun along , behind the horses!
The 1894 American Ordnance Company Catalogue shows these Landing Guns. The all have fixed trails and the small wheel near the end of the trail. As can be seen it can be swiveled up out of the way. In use it likely allows the gun to be moved about the ships deck with out scraping and more likely makes it easier to drag it onto shore.
