From an Apple farm apperantly ~ But these
look very ex military, though I can find no marks.
Quite weathered and worn but still intact -
They seem to follow the 4.5" box construction (though larger) with
extra support bars across them. There are nails through
the bottom bent flat so there may have been something
fitted internally originally, though no sign of what.
23 1/4" to 23 1/2" inches long respectively, the box itself.
15" wide and 8 inches in height.
If any one has an idea I would be glad to hear it ~

Well I can save the beckets and handles, could be used to restore a proper box if any one can use such ?

Boxes Are Military !!!!!
I found this mark on one , use could be anything of course.
The only sign of lid attachment are small nail holes on the top edge,
so maybe rations or some such thing - with a fixed lid.
I'm presuming a ww1 era use with these handles.
Does this mark help out date wise at all -

I had taken the unmarked one to pieces and reaasembled it, what a
Sh-t show that was, rusted and some what rotted. But it looks okay now.
I had thought of them as worthless decorators until 10 minutes ago.
But if I haven't buggered them up , they were pretty much done by
others. Metal rusted, painted on two sides, rot inside. The marked one
I'm not taking aprt having learned my lesson. But I think it's too late
to save it now as in put it to clear wood. I would have to sand it over all
because of previous paint and now mine etc.
Thoughts any one on that ?

While the actual use for the box is unknown presently It would hold
80 No 80 fuzes in two layers of 40. With room under each layer for a board with
circular holes for the fuzes to sit in holding them in place for shipping with anther
board or something over the top layer for padding possibly. Such boards could be
loose and leave no trace after removal.
The internal measurements are; 21 3/4" long, 13 1/4" wide and 6 1/2" deep.

With the heavy steel strapping its got to be for something heavy, Ordnace related but could be engine parts etc.

Indeed, could be anything, we will likely never know unless a nice marked one shows up.
