During the glory days of the Strategic Defense Initiative aka 'Star Wars' a group of scientists built as photon torpedo lancher. Built in a long shed and using circa 32,000 lead-acid batteries, the 'torpedo' went about 10mm before the atmosphere took over. It needs the vacuum of space to work.
