Specialist Auctions

Hi all
I have bought & sold on both SA & evilbay - unfortunately they are the way they are.
I do not use any sniper or try anything clever as I think this spoils the fun & object of the exercise as well as not being very sportin (eh old chap?)!!
Agree with Dano if I think it is a good buy at the buy it now or snap price I just go for it!!
Proper auctions are good fun for a buyer but limits you as a seller & real auctions are a more social event - but if you want to sell online realy gets you a wider audience.

A very interesting thread indeed! At least I now know that it wasnt just myself that would sit up until dark o clock or else try and use the computer at work just to be there at the end of an auction! Of course this was in my sniping days when it was all important to get that particular item that I was after.
All that is over now as I reckon the risk of a heart attack in the run up to the end of the auction just isnt worth it, followed by the deep depression and anger that followed because the winning bidder got the drop on you by placing his bid 3/10ths of a second after you! The whole thing must have appeared ridiculous to an observer.

So my rules now are to place a bid for the item that I think is worth it and no more - the sniping days are over for good as far as I am concerned. Having said that I find that many sellers on Specialist Auctions set a "Snap it up" price which I reckon is a good thing, indeed I just picked up six " Longest Day" blank cartridges recently - something I reckon I would not see in my modest collection...well pleased with that one!

To Tony E - I know the round you were watching as I had it bookmarked myself but forgot all about it until after the auction ended. What was it? With that extended neck it looked odd to say the least - I was thinking multi ball at one point but now I dont know! Peter Labbets .303" book didnt appear to show it (or was i not looking hard enough!)

I use Sniper on ebay for a couple of reasons. First is I don't want to add to the interest in an item. Second, I don't want to be part of or start a t minute bidding war. Happened to me once and I still regret it. Finally, I forget to bid.

I always throw in my highest bid. If I lose the item it means I didn't want it badly enough (upon calm, unpressurized deliberation).

Sa .303

I really do not know what that .303 was. It is not in PL's .303 book.

The headstamp was that of a normal Powder Mark I round, itself worth about 150, but I have not seen anything similar. I also thought multi-ball, but....

I am hoping to have a good look at it in the flesh before it goes to its new home so may be able to report something shortly.

Regards
TonyE

Agree with you boxcar - an interesting & different thread.
I think most of us must trawl the usual sites & it is annoying when we miss or forget to bid on something - but how sad would we be if we were glued to the PC online for one item?
If anything our own failings help to add to the `hunt` & make our interest & goals all the more personal & challenging (as well as making what we missed more valuable?).
