Now here is a sweet item i acquired in a bit of a trade for a badly repainted similar item.
Lovely label inside, still some original stencilling left and a makers mark also!
Very happy with it but how can i preserve that nice, but brittle label?
I also wonder if that is some sort of glue or lacquer used to put the label on?

cheers

I think during WW2 they used hot glue cooked from bones or similar, after drying a few decades I have not found any way to get it soft or loose again. Therefore just leave it.
If the label is too loose you may protect it with a piece of plastic foil that you tape over it on the can far outside the label. But remember that the tape glue also gets hard during time and most likely can't be removed from metal after some years.

Ok Boys, thanks for the tips :)

Well i spotted this one a few months ago on a stall and the bloke was using it as his medals carrier!
Im hoping to display thi one open with a repro rack and my one and only stick-gren inside.

I know what is a rack, Paul, but I didnt know there are repro ones, are you sure? Yes, original ones are extremelly expensive, last one I saw at Ciney was 400 euro and not mint, one hook missing.

At epay you can see them from time to time, they are from excavation and price range is 200-350 euro. I never have seen a repro rack, it is this what Im asking for.

I was told by a conservator

To use simple flour and water, nothing gets damaged and it's reversible. You would have to test a piece of paper to see how this sticks to the metal though. Or do this to stick a support backing paper on the torn bits, use acid free though.

Or maybe that delicious edible Kiddy paste they use in Schools ~:tinysmile_cry_t2:
