I'm still not happy with this one, so here are a few more photos!
I have been told, quite correctly, that this is a Hispano 404, HEI, and was shown one for comparison - red lower and buff upper with the same fuse.
Does anybody know why this one hasn't been painted? ( by the way, there is a very small M on the projectile and fuse)

Agree, certainly looks like 20mm Hispano projectile, with the wider style driving band(compared to the similar Oerlikon).
Looks like remnants of red paint in the stampings, so likely worn or sanded off.
Is the tip of the fuze painted or is it just verdigris? some of the fuzes had colour coded tip markings also.
 
Thanks for your reply - yes the tip has remnants of paint on it, not verdigris. The fuse is 253 Mk 1 and the green paint would show that it is insensitive/strikeless. The only trace of red paint would seem to be in the stamped letters
