The Hunley submarine

Launched in July 1863 the Hunley was the first combat submarine to sink an enemy warship. It was powered by a screw that ran through the hull and turned by hand by the crew (great MPG) The Hunley was used by the Confederacy during The American Civil War and had the dubious distinction of killing every crew member ever on her. It had been sank twice and raised killing all crew. It sank the Union ship The USS Houstanic. The Hunley had a torpedo mounted on a long shaft extending from the front of the submarine. The Hunley rammed the torpedo through the side of the Houstanic then the idea was to get the hell out of there quick before the torpedo exploded. The Hunley later sank a third time. The Hunley was located in 1995 and raised August 8, 2000 with all dead crew members still aboard.

well, Dano, that has happened on February 17, 1864 at approx 9.30pm in front of Charleston Harbour, but the sloop sunk was named USS "Housatonic".

No wonder the crew didn't get out when the sub sunk as apparently the hatches were only 14 inches across.

Even a foot under water the presure differences there would have been no hope of opening any hatches, think of the weight of water acting down on the hatch doors.
