Unknown marking on German 7,92 mm cartridge

Hello Antoon,
your 7,9x57 should be a copperwashed steelcase - that you have probably forgotten to mention.
The VIIIw1 is the firm that copperplated the steelcups or discs before the drawing process of the case. On your special case the w indicates another firm of the Hugo Schneider ( HASAG ) group located in Taucha - thats also close to Leipzig.

The cartridge case material code is located at 3 o'clock IXc1 'IX August-Thyssen-Htte A.G., Franz-Lenze-Str. 3, Duisburg- Hamborn / c Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke A.G., Witte & Co., Werk Schwerte/Ruhr, Westfalen / 1 Steel analysis number
The code combinations below was only used to identify copper plated steel cartridge cases as follows:
- Roman numerals I-XXII indicates the steel mill cartridge case supplier.
- The lower case alphabetic code e.g. a, b, c, d, e indicates the cartridge case plating firm.
- Numbers after the lower case alphabetic code, indicates the steel analysis code e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15 or 17.
The cartridge case material code is located at 3 o'clock IXc1 'IX August-Thyssen-Htte A.G., Franz-Lenze-Str. 3, Duisburg- Hamborn / c Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke A.G., Witte & Co., Werk Schwerte/Ruhr, Westfalen / 1 Steel analysis number

Hi, check-out Dan Kent's book on 7,9mm. German ammo - all this info is explained - some, but only a small amount of these steel copper -clad cartridge cases you will find lacquered. Would you German SAA collectors like me to image my German label book? Cheers all, RonB.

This code identified the steel mill that provided the steel for the case, the firm that plated the case and the steel analysis code. These are as follows:
Steel mill:VII: Bochumer Verein fr Gustahlfabrikation A.G., Bochum
Plating firm: w: Hugo Schneider A.G. Messingwerke, Hugo Schneider Strae 87, Taucha-Leipzig
Steel Analysis number: 1: C : 0,15 - 0,22 % / Mn : 0,4 % / Si : 0,12 % / P : 0,03 % / S : 0,03 %
