Want Info on M8 SP Howitzer 75mm Projectiles and Casings

Were they different from the standard 75mm howitzer projectiles and casings? Could a M8 SP crew grab regular howitzer ammo and use it? Any pics of M8 SP howitzer ammo?? Have read that various M8 SP rounds were of different lengths, does that mean they could have used field artillery ammo? Thanks for any help.

75mm Howitzer ammo is all the same, no matter what howitzer fired them. They did have the M41 HE projectile which was shorter than the M48, but both projectiles were used in the Howitzer.

The 75mm howitzer used some of the same projectiles as the 75mm gun, like the Wp and HE projos, but the longer Gun case from the Sherman wouldn't fit the howitzer.

Thanks Hazord--What I understand you to say is that both the M8 SP 75mm howitzer and the field artillery 75mm howitzer can use the same ammo, but neither can use the Sherman's 75mm ammo, due to case length.

Let me put it a different way, the "ammo" consists of a cartridge case with propelling charge, and a projectile. The Howitzer uses a shorter case and smaller propelling charge. The tank case is longer and contains more powder, and won't fit in the howitzer. The same M48 HE projectile and M64 WP projectile is fired from either weapon.

So, half of the ammo (the projectiles) is interchangeable.
