WW2 1.1 in 75 Caliber MK1 USN shell casing what was it used for?

I picked up a shell casing marked 1.1 in 75 caliber MK1 dated 1943. Looks to be a US Navy round. I never seen one before and my guess its anti aircraft. I know the Navy used 20mm and 40mm. I remenber seeing a quad mount anti aircraft gun in early WW2 Navy footage and wonder if this is the round it uses? How rare are these? I'll post pictures sometimes this week.

Thanks,
Michael Hale

From this article on my website: http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/collecting 23-28mm.htm

Attention now switches to the USA and the 1.1 inch naval AA gun, made only in a four-barrel mounting. The big 28x199SR cartridge was powerful, but the gun was slow-firing and required careful maintenance, so the 40mm Bofors was preferred. The one in the photo has a replica projectile.

You can find out more here, with lots of gun photos: http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_1-1-75_mk1.htm

Thanks for the info and nice shell collection. I never seen 1.1 inch Naval round. I bought 4 shell casings and this is one of them. I'll post pictures later.
