Hi,

I thought I would share some Boys photos with everyone. I got these 2 fired PII cases a few months ago now, and two fired projectiles arrived from Leeski this morning, to my surprise after weighting them they seems to be a perfect match! Both projectiles seems to be just under the 425-grain weight of the typical Practice Mark 2 (Aluminium cored).

I got this the other day off e bay..............it just looked interesting.....and was cheap.
Advertised as a paperweight made out of 18 pounder steel.

The inscription on the edge says
"18 pounder H.E. Steel
Blaenavon Cloy Lt
1917d"

A quick search on the internet revealed:

"Administrative and biographical history: The Blaenavon Iron and Coal Company was formed in 1836 and in that year purchased the ironworks at Blaenavon, Monmouthshire. The company went into liquidation in 1864. It was superseded by the Blaenavon Company Ltd, which sold out to the Blaenavon Iron and Steel Company Ltd in 1870. The cost of the switch to steel production in the 1870s forced that company's liquidation in 1878. It was replaced with a new Blaenavon Co. Ltd (the 'New Company'), incorporated in 1879, which purchased the Blaenavon Iron and Steel Works for £75,000. In 1909 the company's assets comprised 563 acres of freehold land, an iron works and steel works and underlying minerals. The plant then consisted of two blast furnaces, three Siemens Martin open hearth furnaces, soaking pits, reheating furnaces, cogging mill, finishing mill and boilers. There was also a steel tyre works, a quarry and three collieries. These works were extended by the erection of a Coke Oven and By-Product Plant in 1911 and a steel solid wheel and axle plant between 1937 and 1941. During both World Wars the Company was involved in Government work. During the First World War it manufactured shell steel as a Government 'Controlled Establishment'. During the Second World War a Crown Plant was installed for the production of aluminium and magnesium alloys for the Ministry of Aircraft Production. Following the First World War production gradually declined and by the Second World War steel production had stopped altogether. The Company lost its coal mining interests following the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947."

What a great piece of history! I assume its one of those salesmans gifts that seem to crop up from time to time.
The Army and bomb squad were called in to help safely remove potentially dangerous munitions from the property.
Dangerous: An array of weapons including rockets, shells and grenades were removed from the property by police, army and bomb disposal unit

Witnesses said more than 30 guns, including rifles and shotguns, and a gun cabinet were removed from the house.
Police arrived at the property followed by forensics and the bomb disposal unit.
The guns were placed in green bags and stowed in a metal trailer parked outside the house before they were towed away by a white van.
Rockets, shells, rocket launchers, grenades and ammunition were seen being bagged up outside the house.
At the peak of the incident there were about 15 officers involved and nine police vehicles, including marked and unmarked cars and vans.
Neighbours gathered in their gardens in the quiet street to watch the drama unfold.
One unnamed woman said: 'I was shocked at the amount of guns in a semi-detached house in a quiet estate.'
A man, who also declined to be identified, said: 'We are shocked and surprised. It's a quiet residential street. Nothing like this happens. I was shocked by how many guns I was seeing coming out the door. There was a whole arsenal of weapons. I have lived here about 40 years and I have never seen anything like it.'
A neighbour, who also did not want to be identified, believed the man arrested was involved in a historical re-enactment group.
She said: 'He built the garage to store a cannon, but he had a licence for that. He's a decent bloke, a very polite and very nice neighbour.'
West Mercia Police said officers executed a warrant yesterday, and after searching the house called in the bomb disposal team as a precaution.

A 65-year-old man was last night in custody.
Inspector John McKay said at the scene: 'One person has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an illegal firearm. As a result of that we're carrying out a search of the house. I'm not going to elaborate on the investigation because it's still at an early stage.
'During our search we discovered some munitions. We asked the Army to come in and keep them safe for us.

'The only reason the Army has been called is because they have the experts to handle the munitions. I'm not qualified to say what the munitions are.'
Insp McKay declined to confirm how many guns and other weapons had been seized.
I am at a loss with this item. I would like to draw upon the knowledge of this group to help me identify this . The item has the characteristics of a Tube Vent Sealing Percussion Primer BUT… it is threaded AND it has the square protrusion which I cannot find on any of the documented Tubes or Primers in production from 1880 onward. I know the Japanese Ordnance designes were based on a lot of older British systems so I spent a bunch of time trying to find the British counterpart but I almost think this is a hybrid design but for which system??? The other interesting note is that this item did not contain black powder. Instead it appears to have held a beveled stick of cordite (or similar propellant) along with approximately four “washer” type piece of propellant in the end.
