Attached are 3 photographs of a large cone bore projectile that has been fired.
My query is, keeping in mind this have clearly been fired and the rear flange is squeezed in, how is it that the front flange isn't.
Its not been messed with, there is no indication that anyone has tried to pull out the front flange.
The only explanation I can think of is that after exiting the barrel the centrifugal force was so great the front flange did not retain its squeezed shape and partly reverted to the original shape. Clearly a failed experiment as the projectile would then not be as aerodynamic.
Front flange diameter is between 67 and 69mmm
Rear flange diameter is roughly 58mm
Narrowest point of projectile (the part the front flange would squeeze into) is 40mm
All solid and INERT
Thoughts anyone?
Dave.

Good day all!
I bought this about 25+ years ago in a shop in Hastings or St. Leonards and brought it back to the States with me. I did a bit of research at that time, but that was pre-Internet and resources were not easily found. So it has been sitting on a shelf in my family room until recently. Any information is appreciated. I'm fairly certain it's a 40mm, 2 pounder, but beyound that I am pretty much in the dark.

Thanks in advance for your comments,

I would think this was picked up soon after firing judging by the condition and lack of corrosion.

Hello

here are few ww2 german 8 cm mortar shells. THEY ARE ALL INERT.
They have been found few tears ago in Germany in an ammunition experimental factory.
All contain a kind of tar and have markings telling inert (Bl = Blindgeladene = inert) on fuzes or bodies; OK for that.
But, why these shells have not a charges tail? They are shortest than original ones.
I am still looking for what it was supposed to be.
Regards
I would prefer a British reference. The ones in the U.S. have been mis-identified as Armstrong shells.
Best Regards,

To All Interested,
For years collectors and authors have referred to the British copper studded projectile as an Armstrong invention. However, the copper studded shell was copied from the French by the Woolwich Arsenal and Laboratory and termed the 'Woolwich System'. Early models were fitted with zinc/lead studs for use in bronze rifles. Later the Royal Laboratory chnged to copper studs.
The system was made for rifle cannon made by the Arsenal and also contracts let out to The Elswick Ordnance Company (EOC).
Those made by the Royal Laboratory will have the R L stamp on its base and those made by Armstrong's EOC will have 'EOC' cast or stamped into the shell's ogive.
Below are two fuzing systems used in the 9 pdr.
Best Regareds,
John

Bought this off SA recently, when it arrived i though someone had butchered the bottom so though id bought a pup! Had another look yesterday and popped out the base, seems its original and is obviously base eject. The shear pins seemed to be fitted randomly, but i have been informed this is common on early shells like this. So is it star, smoke or what? Any info appreciated, cheers<a href="http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=77688&d=1367584795" title="Name: 12 pdr 001.jpg
