Ija signal flares
Hi there Folks,:tinysmile_shy_t:
Here is the extract from Ken Elks book on the subject.
These were used in the 10 Year Type Pyrotechnic Pistol and come in two basic forms, one with a parachute, the other a star type. The cartridge case is externally similar in both cases save for the markings and is straight-sided and made with a brass base and cardboard walls, or complete brass case.
The parachute flare may be either day or night use, the former being known as Dragons. These emit a dense coloured smoke in either black, yellow, red, white or green. This colour is indicated in Japanese ideographs stamped on the base of the case and filled in with the appropriate colour, and also by a closing disc which gave the colour and date of manufacture. Visual range of Dragons is given as 8,800 yards.
The colour of night signal parachute flares were denoted by coloured closing discs and bands around the body. No specimen of this was available for study.
Possibly the most commonly found are the star flares. These are marked on the base with serrations stamped around the rim of the base to show which colour, and the number of stars by one, two or three parallel curving lines below. This is to enable poor light identification, with daylight identification from ideographs filled with the appropriate colour.
The main ideographs found are:-
