Box Steel C 207 Mks 1 and 2

AE501

HONOURED MEMBER RIP
Box Steel C207 Mk1 was for Cartridges QF 2 Pr A/Tk Mks 9A and 10A guns.
Note that the handles are located on the lid opening side and reverse of the package instead of on the sides.

This was changed to sides in C 207 Mk2, which was used for the guns Mk 9A, 10A and 10B. (see handles and package mark Plate in book 'Firing Now').

The 2 Pr Mk 10B C207 Mk2 packages were marked as SVAP (Super Velocity Armour Piercing) to distinguish rounds from HVAP (High Velocity Armour Piercing) which were used in the Mks 9A and 10A guns.

The user always seemed to use APHV and APSV which I always thought meant that all they cared about was armour penetration, which seems fair enough when you are at the sharp end.

I see the plates are all out of order.

Box Steel B167A - 2 Pr A/Tk gun.
Although Box Steel B167 external dimensions are the same, there is some difference in the internal fittings.
1 - 3 are for Mks 9A and 10A gun but 4 is for the Mk10B gun with the squeezebox (Littlejohn adapter).

Thank you for showing the red package which contained 2 pr Mk10B gun SVAP Mk1 (Littlejohn). You can see where the 'corned beef tin' type tear off strip was removed round the middle.
It is the first time I have seen this red package since I was involved in a repair programme on Mk1 and 2A shot in 1957.
We were busy sorting the good from the bad and were clear varnishing the shot when the task was stopped, probably because there was no requirement.
The Mk9A and Mk10A gun ammunition was retained because they were still being used in armoured cars.
The box next to the red one is 207 Mk1 (handles on the same side as the hinges and clips) and the other one is 207 Mk2 ( handles conventionally on the sides).
The box in 'Firing Now' is described as a Mk1 but is in fact a Mk2.
