7,7cm F. Schr. 96 (umg) shrapnel shell

if you had access to a lathe it would make the sanding process a lot easier.i have done the same process and it can take up to 10 or more attempts to get all the pits and holes filled

Don't I know it...:tinysmile_angry_t: But I don't have one and aren't likely to get access to one in the foreseeable future. I have however recently invested in a newer and more powerful hand-held sander, which has helped a little.

Update. Currently trying a new method to remedy the Labour of Sisyphus that is filling in the remaining pits. I’m depositing small blobs of the Revell matt blue into them with a fine brush. It’s relatively viscous, so it is flowing into the pit before drying and then it can be sanded back. A slow process, but it seems to be gradually working.

A last undercoat of grey primer before I paint it blue. I would be lying if I said I’d got the surface perfect, but the law of diminishing returns was really starting to bite and frankly I’d got bored. It’s going to get a hand brushed finish which will hopefully help disguise any remaining imperfections.

PS. A little tip for anyone restoring a similar projectile with a ribbed base: the perfect tool for levelling the surface in the grooves is a round file.

After a couple of coats of paint. On reflection I decided that the Revell 56 Matt Blue was slightly too dark so I did a 50/50 mix with some lighter Humbrol 109 WWI Blue Matt I had left over from a previous project. I think it compares quite well to the colour in the contemporary illustration in post 2.

To make it more interesting I’m planning to do a ‘St.’ (Stahl) stencil on it. It’ll be finished off with a light coat of Matt clear coat which will make the apparent colour slightly darker.

Doing the ‘St.’ symbol with a homemade stencil. I printed it off the computer, traced the image onto clear plastic sheet and then cut it out. It turns out that the Arial font on MS Word is pretty much the same.

Finished! (Almost)

Stencilling isn’t one of my strong points and the initial result was a mess - partly due to inaccurate cutting and partly due to using too much paint on the sponge. Getting it presentable took a lot of fine tuning with a small modelling brush.

A repro resin fuze is on order from Milcorem and I am on the lookout for a 7,7cm FK.96 case. As these are very common, I quite fancy one of those bi-metallic ones for something a little less ordinary. Anyone got one for sale?

Now definitely finished after receiving and painting up a resin repro Dopp.Z.96 fuze from Milcorem. (He also does the fuze adaptor rings if anyone needs one) I appreciate metallic paints are only partly realistic, but I think it’s a significant improvement on no fuze at all. The shell has also spent much of the last two months in direct sunlight in order to slightly age the paint.
