You can prolly tell by my posts that I am working on my 57mm collection. A Kentuky friend has unknowingly shamed me into digging them out and going through them...…………
The photos got out of order when I uploaded them, but this is one each of the US Projectile variations for the 57x303R 6PDRs I have. I know I may need to move some projectiles to other cases, but until last night, I never could read most of the head stamps. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
If you have different variations, please post them.
Left to right on first pic
1.) A.M.O. Co projectile. Copper driving band. 1891 3-Piece Winchester Case. The driving band is very pronounced and measures 61mm compared to 58mm on the others. I think it had been a Driggs type projectile, but the threads has been machined out.
2.) Driggs Type Mfg by WM Cramp. Copper driving band. Winchester 1898 Solid Drawn case.
3.) Winchester mfg undo Hotchkiss patents with brass band and steel base plug. Undated Winchester solid drawn case.
4.) Projectile is identical to #3 except it has a different profile driving band and made of copper. It is undated and unmarked. This case has strange characters on the head stamp, resembling double struck Japanese characters.
5.) Another profile Change on the driving band. Band is made of copper and stamped PRATT & CADY Co. Dated 1892. The case is a 1918 U.S.N.G.F solid drawn case.
6.) Another driving band profile. MK 1 Mod 3. Smooth Copper profile with the navy anchors, stamped EPF with an E in a crown. I can’t make out all the stamps on the base. What I can make out is “17 WCRTH NCTON”. The case is a reprinted 1898 Winchester Solid Drawn case. The primer is stamped REM-UMC MK X-941
7.) Same smooth driving band as #6, but unstamped and this projectile has a flat point. I can not make out any stamping on the base. The case is a 1911 U.M.C. Co.
