1906 VSM MkI 18 Pounder case

Hi,

I don’t collect 18pdr cases per se, but it was very keenly priced. ;-)

Is this what is known as a MkI* case? It appears to have been reused in WWI with a MkII projectile. There’s a faint ‘S.’ under the 1906, a faint ‘CF’ above the ‘F’, a faint ‘A.’ by the ‘I’ and a very faint ‘HRY’ to the left of the ‘18’.

What more can you tell me about it?

Cheers,
Mark

Lucky find, I never see these :tinysmile_cry_t4:

I think it is a pretty straight forward MK1 reused but others will know more about the markings.

1906 - Year of manufacture
22 3 1907 - Date of Acceptance
A. - The case has been annealed
S. - The case has been subjected to a Scleroscope test (hardness testing)

HRY - Is almost certainly a Repair Station, even though it is not enclosed in a rectangle. The RY normally denotes a railway company, but as to who 'H' might be I have no idea.

C.F.F. - Case life, the case has had two full charges of smokeless powder. The 18 Pr originates from a period when artillery cartridge cases were somewhat a bit of a novelty and unknown quantity. Initially the cases were 'lifed' at six equivalent full charges of smokeless, hence the necessity to record the fillings. In time, as experience was gained, 18 Pr and few others were no longer restricted to six full charges but the marking practice was retained.

* - In this instance the asterisk denotes the case has been rejected at proof. Were it placed immediately after the mark it would denote a modification.

Tim,

Would HRY be Highland Railway? At the moment cannot think of any others here that start with an H.

Roger.
