Mk-36 Thermonuclear (Hydrogen) Bomb at The SAC Aerospace Museum

Displayed on the ground, underneath the wing of a B-47, the Mk-36 was a first generation special weapon. First generation special weapons were characteristically very heavy due to the thick outer casing. One reason for the thick casing was to protect the inner workings from cannon fire and missile fragments to somewhat guarantee positive functioning.

There were 2 major variants of this bomb, a clean version rated at 6 Megatons, and a dirty version rated at 19 Megatons that used a Depleted Uranium pusher/Tamper. The extra Uranium was ignited by the fusion from the second stage. Copyright 2019 HAZORD
