Mills Grenade

Hi ..
i'm hoping someone out there will be able to help regarding a mills grenade i recently purchased. it was sold as a mills 36 but i'm not sure it is..i think it may be a No5
also there is no filler screw..it is solid casting as can be seen from photos, there are also no holes drilled to accommodate the safety pin.
white paint is also showing beneath the black paint..training grenade maybe??
Obviously this is an unfinished body from the factory, but any information on this would be great.

Hi Kenny, Looks like you have a tarted up reject, unfinished No 5 or No 23 1 which may have been used for throwing practice by the looks of it from its original white colour. Never been a live gren as there is no pin, nor the holes and no lever could be fitted. Baseplug looks to be from a No36 as well. again not right. If it was mine I would remove the paint and repaint it white as it was originally intended or leave it as is to show what they should no look like. Over to you.

Hello Andy.
Yeah that is pretty much as I suspected, however what do you think the value of this would be? Would it be worth more as a regect unfinished body ?with black paint removed obviously .Does this make it more desirable to collectors?
I was really after a 36 but i am half tempted to hold onto it as you say..and you are right by the way the base plug is from a 36 dated 1970..

Hi bud, the money is in the base plug, 1970 not common, sell that, ime sure its worth more than the body which are quite common but you might get your money back, repainted white and distressed a bit to look like its been thrown. In its present condition,I wouldnt buy it from you but might be a starter for a new collector.Up to you really whether you save or scrap it to be honest.Ime sure you would get plenty of takers for the plug on ebay.
