Internet states the M8 smoke grenade produces toxic smoke as opposed to the M18. Can someone define " toxic" ?

The AN-M8 hand grenade produces harmful hydrochloric fumes that irritates the eyes, throat, and lungs. It should not be used in closed-in areas unless the users are wearing protective masks.[SUP][2]

From Wikipedia, so it must be right.

We were taught that it displaces/consumes the oxygen in enclosed spaces which causes asphyxiation. I'm with Rick, just knowing what I've heard or remembered.

Hexachloroethane was mixed with Zinc oxide along with other things. Metal fume fever we call the damage. Welding galvanized metal can also cause it.

I would not breath any smoke compound if I can avoid it.
