Another fortunate spot on a dealer’s website. This time misidentified as a fragmentation sleeve for a Soviet RGD-33 grenade. Even in this condition, I think I got it for quite a good price. It’s now gone off for an acid dip.

The aim is to get it clean and then repaint it. (Looks like there are some traces of Feldgrau under the rust) I’m not going to try and fill in the pitting as it has such a complex surface.

As you can see, a complicating factor is that the remains of the head of a grenade are still stuck inside. It would be nice to get them apart without damaging either. We shall see...

There’s a patch of hard rust that acid isn’t having much effect on, so I’ve switched over to electrolysis. I had very good results last year with a Pak 40 case when I combined electrolysis followed by an acid dip.

The end result. Two minor disappointments: the remains of the attachment clips disintegrated during the rust removal and what I hoped was most of an M24 head inside turned out to be mostly fresh air.

Ah well, I’ve dignified it with a fresh coat of Feldgrau and hopefully I’ll bump into a nicer one at some point.
