Hi all..
picked up these 2 today from a local antiques centre, I have no idea what they are, I’m usually into things a bit more modern! Cases cut down? Got to be
Seem to be about 37mm, bottom of cases marked GR in a monogram, S 968 on one S1070 on other, then 1916.
cases have fired primers.
Projectiles dated 1917 SW monogram and 67.
the top of the projectile seems to come apart into 2 pieces, the top had SW monograms on too.
each has 2 thin copper driving bands.
whatever they are, £9.50 the pair isn’t bad enough even if the cases are cut down.
they look nice on the shelf now I’ve got the rust off the projectiles.

They are 37mm Austrian trench gun rounds and the cases are the correct length. Very nice and a very, very nice price!

You lucky man, I've been looking for a complete one for over years for a cutaway model without luck. Even the not complete ones go for 150 euro's over here and you buy two for …..9,50 pound.
By the way, they are bounding shells. As soon as it hits the ground, the nosecap acts as a spigot and the rest of the shell is blown upward appr 2 mtrs, and explodes mid-air. A very effective way to make a light shell effective in the trenches and mountains

Well done on picking those up for such a good price, if you want to remove the top section from the shell body i have a tool made up for the job, its a tight tolerance fit and i have seen a few ruined by people trying to lever them apart with a screw driver. If you want to use it just send me a pm.
Best Weasel.

Attached are a couple of pictures of one i used to own showing where they split and what may if your lucky still be inside.

Many thanks all, a good find then.
my projectiles are different to yours weasel, and doesn’t have the screw in the forward section

veery nice. They are among my favorites in early 37mm which I specialize. The SW is for Skoda Werk, by the way.

My projectiles do not have the screw in the head, and there are 2 cut outs to allow a tool to break them down, and the uppermost piece has a 2 sided spanner type attachment.

In the model you have the second stage screws into the body rather than being a press fit as on the model that Weasel has shown. The small top piece also unscrews.

Hi Nismosonic,

Wow! £9.50 for two Austrian George Roth (GR in monogram) 37mm rebounding shells, that's a mega bargain, thanks for showing.

I paid £86 for mine a few years ago and is the same type with single driving band and push in top section with screw in tip as the one Weasel posted pics of. It also has the internal screw in workings although now can't remove top section.

Both projectile and case dated 1916.

I think your projectiles as they are dated 1917, have 2 smooth driving bands and flutes for the tool to remove top section are probably the next Mk.(e.g Mk.1 Mk.2 etc) of this particular shell type unless another nation produced them too with these differences (french 37mm projectiles favoured two thin driving bands, although these were chamfered and not smooth).

Maybe some of the more educated BOCN members could shed some light on this as i always believed George Roth, Austria, was the sole producer of these shells.

A truly remarkable concept for it's effectiveness.

BEAR.
