Nice shells.I have slightly different ID on them.

1. HE-T night tracer
2. I-T day tracer
3. HE-T day tracer possibly Tropic load?

Original designation according to LDv 4000:
1 - 13 mm Brandsprenggranatpatrone Glimmspur o. Zerl. (13 mm Brsprgr.Patr. Gl'spur El. o. Zerl)
2 - 13 mm Brandgranatpatrone L'spur El. o. Zerl. (13 mm Brgr.Patr. L'spur El. o. Zerl.)
3 - 13 mm Brandsprenggranatpatrone L'spur o. Zerl. (13 mm Brsprgr.Patr. L'spur El. o. Zerl)
All datasheets dated May 1942

May I ask how you identify the incendiary part on No1 & 3 ?
I thought incendiary was only if it had a green /blue band for self destruct?
I have F.Petter book:- Munition fur deutsche Flieger Bordwaffen bis 1945 as reference and photos do not match. I have lots to learn .

I would like your opinion on these explosive shells 13x64B.
Which do you consider are incendiary? I am not sure myself. Ron.

Bob, same question about identification of HEI.
I thought 13mm HEI had a blue strip on top.

I have an ID guide to Luftwaffe ammo from 13 mm upwards, including coloured diagrams of the projectile types. For the 13 mm it shows various colours for incendiaries:

1. Yellow body with blue band under fuze = HEI-T without SD
2. Yellow body with reddish-brown band above the driving band = HEI-T without SD (Can't help thinking there might be some confusion here)
3. Blue body = incendiary
4. Black pointed body with blue band around ogive (+ Ph for phosphorus)

Hi, I based my answer on the LDv 4000 (the pages in question are attached).
The color schemes you are referring to are pre 1942. If you look for example at Pawlas Munitionslexikon he has to color schemes for the Brandspreng old and new manufacture.
Since the all the rounds are 1942 younger I took the liberty to assume that new color scheme is applied.
One more page from LDv 4000 is added . The color scheme by May 1942. I don't remember seeing any 13 mm ammo with two rings above the driving band. So I would say that only one was made for the L'spur / Glimmspur.
I also wonder if by 1942 pure 13 mm Sprengpatrone was manufactured.

I am always open to your thoughts, Bob

I do believe the last one was marked tropical. I will have to look.

It there a way to ID the tropical variants?

Joe

So with everything said.
1 … HE-I
2 … Incendiary
3 … HE-I-T

Am I right? or do all of them have a tracer?

Joe

I should leave this to the experts but from my book reference and collection I note the following ID.
For 13mm the Tropic load has a black case mouth seal that also reaches the drive band on HE loads.
On APT loads you find red mouth/band seal or a red tip on the projectile.

20mm differ and can have trop stencilled on the projectile or a red mouth/band seal or a yellow mouth/band seal for HE.
This is the limit of my ID knowledge so I eagerly await your replies.

Here is what says the LDv 4000. This chapter is from February 1943. So after the manufacture of the rounds in question.
I think ron is correct.

Bob
