1896 15Pdr Colour Codes Required.

Hello All,
Wondering if anyone might have the colour codes for this 2/1896 dated 15 Pdr Mk.II shrapnel shell relic I picked up sometime ago please. It has been decorated at some stage as a souvenir of the Boer War but most of that paint is missing & under what remains are traces of light grey. I have had a trawl through here but the few pictures I can see are of black with a single red band but that seems to be for the First World War. I'd like to repaint it in it's period colour scheme if I can get it.
Many thanks for any assistance in advance.
Kind regards,
Ian.

They were grey with a red band at the very top, but gee, I wouldn't be removing that original scroll and lettering.

I agree with Darkman that decoration look original and adds value, most of the ones in the Uk are range recovered, not Boer war souvenirs. There are loads of repainted 15 pdr shells around and cheap rusty ones to restore.

You're not going to find another one like that again AND it is an early Mk11, not the more common later MkV (~1900)!!!

I left the painted broad arrow on my Mk11, with traces of red and some grey on the body.....

As Tigbrand stated - plenty of rusty ones for full restoration purposes.

Here's a colour guide - taking note:

"Shells were painted a lead colour (dirty light grey), instead of the usual black, to distinguish them from 12 pounder shrapnel shells, which were also 3-inch"

Cheers
Drew

BTW - Happy to swap it for one of mine!!! (LOL)

I thought to post a couple of pictures of the top section of a 15pdr shrapnel shell in my collection. I think the remaining paint is original, no date on the top steel section, but it came with the fuze dated 1898. It would appear to have a band of red paint on the top with a grey body colour. Some evidence of a lower read ring. The markings appear to follow the pattern of later British shrapnel shells, just with a grey body. I hope all of you and those close to you stay well.

Thank you for all of your replies & info gents, much appreciated. I've decided to take your advice & leave the shell in it's decorated colours as a souvenir & keep an eye out for one to restore; I didn't realise that they could still be around.
Regards,
Ian.
