Greetings
I have a 75mm cartridge case ...brass with a steel base.
Length is 190mm
Base diameter is 86.8mm
The only markings i can see on the slightly corroded base are a " V " and a " 6 "

My data base lists 2 cartridges 75 x 190R
One is for Schneider Mle 1919 & Mle 1928 mountain guns.
But rim diameter is 89mm so that doesn't fit

The other 75 x 190R is for a German FK L/24 .
Sadly the rim diameter is not given.
I am wondering if my case is for this gun.
Having a steel base adds weight to my speculation.

So can anyone tell me the rim diameter for thr FK L/24 case?
Alpini or another expert on German ammunition....

Thanks very much

How exact did you meassure the length? I think I have the same case but it's 191,5 mm meassured with a caliper.

Your case is made by Rheinmetall, see 90° rotated headstamp:

OK when i get home tonight i will measure the length precisely.
Thanks very much Alpini . And also for seeing/interpreting what i was unable to do :)

Hi Charley, I think you have a WW1 German made case for the Russian 76.2mm Model 1909 mountain gun. Pictured is my example of a very similar case. My understanding is a number of these guns were captured in WW1 and proved useful as Germany did not initially have many mountain guns.

Very interesting!
Yes Vasco your case looks identical to mine.
And neck internal measurement is indeed just over 76mm.

Alpini i remeasured length and yes it is 191.6mm
In my data sheets i have the Russian M1904 and M1909 mountain guns listed at 76.2x192R x87.
So that seems a good match ..

Thank you both very much

One more question about the case for the German FK L/24 gun ...
Was its length actually 190mm ... and what was the rim diameter?
Thank you

It's 75x190R88.

About the russian mountain gun case theory I have some doubts. I had the same theory until some time ago because of the meassurements. But now we have three such cases to study:

-All are made by Rheinmetall and non of them have german acceptance stamps. For comparsion the german made 76,2x385R all had acceptance stamps and the russian primer hole was copied too.
-I never read about a manufacture of cases for russian mountain guns in the archives.
-The base of the russian cases is chamfered which a cannot see on our three cases.

So I think it's more likely an export manufacture and made for a different gun. But sometimes such export cases were also used by the german army without any acceptance stamps.

There was a Krupp Mountain Gun L/11 with 75x192,5R87 which could be a candidate too. About the cases for the Rheinmetall mountain guns there's not much known I think.

Thank you Alpini
OK so it just gets more interesting.
It just shows that there is so much still to be learnt...
So many mysteries yet to be solved :)
